FAQs — the ABBYY Language Services project at Skolkovo

The reasons for becoming a Skolkovo resident, what we are developing and how our new product will help translators

As we stated earlier, ABBYY Language Services has obtained certification confirming the company’s status as a resident of the Skolkovo Innovation Center. Today, we shall describe in more detail what we are doing at Skolkovo.

1. What is being developed?
As you may know from the Center's Web site, we deal with translation management technologies. This project is aimed at helping translators handle large projects involving many participants. For instance, the project's product will be very useful for translating documents, such as documents concerning the construction of a large and complex plant. The work of translators, editors and revisers can be simultaneously coordinated using a cloud-based CAT system, accessed from the Internet using computers, smart phones and tablets.

It is important to note that we do not intend to develop a machine translation application. Our goal is to synchronize the work of professional translators.

Nonetheless, our new product will focus on improving translation memory (TM) operations. Our work over the past four years has helped us to create high-quality and highly efficient algorithms for TM databases. An improved search engine allows the use of the morphology of some 35 languages. Moreover, we have attained higher search efficiency owing to a unique search index algorithm together with parallel calculation technologies.

End-users of our CAT product will have a more cost-effective translation management tool. In addition, our software will help to cope better with large-scale TM databases, such as that of the TAUS Data Association (TDA).

We are currently working on the next step of our project, which is the creation of a differentiating translation technology and a smart TM with outstanding performance much better than any other solution of this type on the market today. TM database efficiency will be one of the major advantages of this new technology.

2. What is a cloud-based CAT-system?
The main difference between a cloud-based CAT system and a desktop-based CAT system is that all data is stored, processed and exchanged on remote servers. This allows for efficiently distributed multi-user project execution that is both transparent and manageable. This system will be available to end-users through a Web interface from any suitable device. The system architecture also enables integration of an external information system by using an appropriate application programming interface (API).

3. Which projects will this system support?
This system will be useful in many ways for large-scale projects, where many participants are simultaneously processing data, and for translating only a few lines, which can be done automatically by using an API on the client’s information system, such as a content management system (CMS), an information repository initial code or a document flow system. All contractors will be able to access the required resources, including a TM and a glossary, on line at the same time, which is this software's major advantage. Those tasks can also be distributed automatically via channels previously established among translators and editors, who operate on their own PCs or tablets and send the translated content through their API to the customer’s initial information system.

4. When will the final product be available?
We are now finalizing the product’s prototype, and the beta version will be available around mid 2014.

5. What is the difference between the new product and ABBYY Translation Cloud?
ABBYY Translation Cloud is a complex solution with a translation management system (ABBYY Translation Management System) and a number of other systems that provide a service bus for their integration. On the one hand, ABBYY Translation Cloud is a general solution for a large number of needs and, on the other hand, its implementation involves an overall adaptation to all of ABBYY's translation business processes.

The product we are developing at Skolkovo can be integrated into any of the existing translation modules owing to its flexibility, including use of other CAT systems, such as the SDL product line, and exclusively deals with translation issues, including preparation, analysis, translation, editing, proofreading, client’s review and completed translation submission.

6. Why have we chosen to develop these technologies at Skolkovo?
The Skolkovo Innovation Center is now the largest innovation center in Russia and opens up real opportunities for IT companies to innovate and compete in the global market. The Center takes interest in promoting start-up projects and venture endeavours. Collaboration with the Center provides a number of important advantages that help a young technology company to make progress. Our project is now in its initial phase, thus syncing perfectly with the Skolkovo concept and meeting all the Center's requirements for innovative companies.

We would be glad to answer any of your questions.

Kind regards,
